On Being An Optimist

Updated: Jan 14, 2024

Embarking on the journey of building a startup is no easy feat. It requires resilience, determination, and perhaps above all, optimism. In a world that often appears challenging and unpredictable, the ability to maintain a positive outlook can be the greatest asset.

Generally being a conservative person, it took me a lot of effort to learn and internalize this skill. Here are my keynotes:

Escape the Seduction of Pessimism - 'Pessimists Sound Smart, Optimists Get Rich'

  • It is up to you whether you want to just sound smart or be rich!

  • As Winston Churchill wisely said, "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.". The world is full of possibilities, waiting to be explored. Resist the temptation to succumb to pessimism. View challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. It's ok to fail, but take the challenges head-on.

  • The world is a much better place than it may at times seem.

Shift from 'If' to 'When'

  • Successful entrepreneurs don't question whether they will succeed but when success will happen.

  • By reframing your mindset, you set the stage for a more determined and optimistic approach to problem-solving.

In Adversity, People Adapt

  • A lot of undue pessimism comes from underestimating how quickly and firmly people adapt.

  • Many black swan events have hit the world like COVID, financial crises, terror attacks, etc. and the doomsayers have frequently predicted the end of humanity. Yet, every time, humanity only comes back stronger.

Take A Long-Term View

  • Setbacks and negative events are quick and make better stories while growth takes forever. Take a long-term view and be an optimist.

Celebrate Small Wins

  • The 'Flywheel Effect' emphasizes the power of small wins that multiply over time. Look for opportunities to make incremental improvements, whether it's reducing costs, improving turnaround time, or releasing small yet innovative products. These small wins can compound and pave the way for substantial success.

Recognize the Power of Serendipity

  • Life is full of unpredictable moments. Every big event could have turned out differently if a few 'little puffs of nothingness' went in the other direction.

  • Stay open to serendipity, and be prepared for unexpected opportunities.

Keep Building

  • Creation is the best way to seek happiness. It brings a sense of fulfilment that surpasses momentary happiness.

  • Stay hopeful and stay true to building and innovating.

Believe in the Unknown

  • Optimism often requires believing in unknown, unspecified future breakthroughs—which seems fanciful and naive. No proven resources or technologies can sustain economic growth. The status quo will plateau. To expect growth is to believe in future technologies. To expect very long-term growth is to believe in science fiction.

  • No known solutions can solve our hardest problems—that’s why they’re the hardest ones. And, by the nature of problem-solving, we are aware of many problems before we are aware of their solutions. So there will always be a frontier of problems we don’t yet know how to solve.

Trust as a Business Strategy

  • Trust is a powerful currency. While some may take advantage of your trustworthiness, still prefer a 'high-trust' approach because then there is no ceiling on what's possible.

  • A 'low-trust' approach might put a floor on how often you get taken advantage of, but it puts a ceiling on what’s possible.

Project Confidence

  • In the world of startups (particularly financial services), projecting a strong, forward-looking confidence not only inspires confidence in your team and partners but also attracts investors.

  • Confidence is a cornerstone of financial success.

Let me end with the following quote from Peter Theil:

'If you think you are going to win, it doesn't mean you are going to win. If you think you are going to lose, you will lose. If you think you will get an A+ on the test, you won't always get an A+. If you think you are going to get an F, you will always get an F"

Keep striving to embrace the mindset of an optimist, celebrate small victories, and stay focused on the long-term journey. In the tough world of entrepreneurship, being an optimist isn't just a mindset—it's a strategy for success.

Keep believing, keep creating, and watch yourself thrive against all odds.

All the best!
